Stiffer Competition for Ecommerce Websites

website design serviceOnline businesses today face more competition than ever. Large corporations now have niche websites eating into their business. Small companies that previously held a respectable market segment are now finding “bloggers” eating into their business with affiliate websites. If your website is going to make it in today’s “DIY” website design generation, it needs to look and perform like a big company website.

What Makes a “Good” Website?

Just like when they walk into a mall, consumers want to know what stores they are in when they are on the Internet. When they do their Google or Bing search and take a link, it should be plain as day when they arrive that they are at the intended website. Do not try and get too cutesy with landing page so it does nothing more than confuse the visitor.

Navigation needs to be extremely easy. One of the leading factors in a high bounce rate is that customers simply do not know where to go or are not offered a call to action to direct them. Your navigation bar should be in plain view and self-explanatory. You should also have a site search box in clear view so they can use it to find the exact content they are seeking.

If there is a blog incorporated into the website, use call to actions to push them in the right direction. For instance, at the bottom of this blog page you will see a call to action directing you to our Web design page. You came here for that specific type of information and if you want to take the next step, we should make it as easy as possible for you.

The site should not be overly busy. Flash and pop ups sound good, and many Web designers will try to sell you on them to jack up the prices, but they are more damaging than helpful to your rankings. Firstly, Flash cannot even be read by the search engine programming, so it is worthless in regard to SEO! Secondly, many of the pop up programs are read as spam, so they can actually hurt you. If you have a newsletter, put a sign up form on the sidebar or your contact page. Do not force it on your readers.

These are important features of website design, but they are far from everything you need for a successful website. If you are in over your head and not seeing the results you want from your online business, it may be time to consult with a professional.
